Importance of Eco-literacy and Ocean Literacy for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
The United Nations announced a Decade dedicated to Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030; UNESCO, 2020) with the mission to provide a unique foundation to strengthen ocean management for the benefit of all of us.
The objective is to join the Stakeholders from around the world under the same cause to ensure that the development of science supports creating the conditions for an ocean that is sustainable. There are six priority societal challenges:
- one clean ocean;
- a healthy and resilient ocean;
- an ocean predictable;
- a safe ocean;
- a productive ocean and exploited in a sustainable way;
- and a transparent, accessible ocean.
Eco-literacy is an etwinning project of integrated environmental education that takes place in all schools/teachers participating in the etwinning project.
The project was created with the objective of promoting ecological literacy and environmental awareness, through activities that complement regular classes and programmatic contents, within the scope of the most diverse disciplines. Its objective is to promote good environmental practices and conscientious citizenship, through a more active participation of schools and school centers in the county in promoting environmental responsibility and awareness and sustainability.

TEACHERS' WEBINAR
Report of the 1st Meeting
The meeting started with a quick introduction of each partner and all the participants and founders got to know eachother. After this introduction, our founders started to present the project with the basical elements of it. They explained what is meant by ‘’Eco-literacy’’ and they tried to make it clear about the aims of this project. After giving answers to all the questions in the minds of each partner, the founders made them familiarized with the idea of ‘’Ecological Thinking’’.
In the second part, the founders shared the project plan with the partners and started to summarize the each headline within the pages of our plan. One of those subjects was the netiquette of our project. To make it meaningful, our founders pointed out that it is really important to work and study all together in cooperation and complete the tasks on time. Our second issue was about safety and parental permission. They asked all the participants to get permission from the families of their students and upload them to the page. And also they reminded us not to share any photos or videos revealing the faces or identities of the students.
Then they went on with the topic of web tool tutoriols. They introduced us all the web 2.0 tools that we will be using during the process of our project. They also asked if we wanted to add any more tools to the list or not. After learning about those tools, they requested from the participants to fill in the contact list form to make sure to get all the notifications about the project. It is vital for communication. And all the participants agreed upon that. Another important subject that our founders suggested was that all the teachers need to upload their introuctions with a picture. They claimed that it is essential to make our page looks prosperous. They also added that both school introduction and student introduction parts are required. As for the student introduction, we are holding a poll to decide which web tool our students want to work on while preparing their introductions. They will choose either ‘’Voki’’ or ‘’Pixton’’.
When it comes to contribution part, our founders shared all the tasks among the participants paying regard to their being volunteer. And they wrote the names of all volunteers under the lines of each task. At this point, all the participants showed great willingness to take part in the tasks. The next topic that we made a decision was preparing poster and logo for our project. The common idea was that each partner should create one logo and one poster and upload them to the page. Our founders reminded that it is substantial to take pictures or videos of the students while they are working on these tasks and present them on the page. And for all these tasks, 30th of January 2022 is a deadline for uploading ideas (posters and logos) ; 10th of February 2022 is a deadline for voting the ideas.
Finally we talked about the mixed teams that includes students and teachers. The founders requested that each partner should write one student name into the each different team’s list. And we also mentioned about the student online meeting date. To decide on the date, we were asked to write our suitable times into the page and then we will set a date which is suitable for each partner.
